Tofu BBQ

This one's tough for me because we grow, dry and grind our own garlic powder — and I'm biased. But I've found the Penzeys product head and shoulders above what you typically find on the shelf.

Ingredients for Tofu

  • 1 14-oz package extra firm tofu

  • 2 Tbsp oil, 30 mL

  • 1 tsp each smoked paprika, cumin, chili, garlic powder

  • ½ tsp each salt and pepper

  • 1 C. BBQ sauce — I recommend Primal Kitchen Classic BBQ

  • 2-3 scallions

  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds

Directions for Tofu

  1. Preheat oven or air fryer to 400°F or 200°C. Pat 16 ounces tofu dry with kitchen paper.

    With your hands, pull the tofu apart into bite-size pieces and add it to a large bowl.

  2. Toss the tofu with olive oil, soy sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, 1 salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Each piece should be fully coated with the condiments.

  3. Transfer tofu onto a baking sheet and arrange it on a single layer.

    Bake in the oven at 400°F or 200°C for 25 minutes or in the air fryer for about 15 minutes.

    The tofu should be slightly charred and crisp on the edges.

  4. Add about ½ to ¾ cup of BBQ sauce (or more to taste), toss with a spatula until coated, and bake for 5 more minutes.

  5. Finally, take the tofu out of the oven, add more BBQ sauce to taste and enjoy.

    Garnish with chopped scallion tops and sesame seeds.
